Jeff Beck - Inspiration From A Master

Lying here in bed, fighting some kind of bad cold, I turned on the tube and saw Jeff Beck on VH1.

Wow, he made me feel like I had done nothing to explore my instrument and nothing to honor my commitment to music, my guitar, or my arts in general.

But not in a bad way.

When you take the opportunity to see a true master, it is inspirational and uplifting.    You see possibilities for your instrument and yourself that you may have never even realized existed.

He plays with out picks, as I do and the fact that he does it on an electric Stratocaster made me realize I could do this too.   And the way he gets a flurry of notes is to use his thumb and his index finger alternating, back and forth, one then the other and so on.

And he keeps his hand on his whammy bar the whole time.

It was stuff I could figure out on my own, but seeing it down so well right in front of me saved me a lot of time.   I didn’t need to reinvent the wheel.

So once again, I recommend to you that you go see the masters at work.    Go see everyone you can, because you learn from everyone, but especially from people who are better than you.

And this follows no matter what field you are in, no matter what you are interested in;   there is always someone who does it better than you; someone who does it differently than you.

Make the effort to experience as many different artists, experiences, etc as you can.

And make a commitment to your instrument, whatever it may be.

Now live that commitment.   It will be it’s own reward, I promise.

And this time I mean it.

It’s now ten o’clock Friday night, but I didn’t practice today, so I’m doing it now…in bed.

Honor your commitment, dammit.
