A New Way To Network

Yesterday I  had the unique experience of performing for a group of people who had gathered together to network and to expose their work and themselves to other’s work in a monthly meeting called Women Who Write organized and maintained by Vicki Abelson (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/vickiabelson).

If  you are a Santa Barbara to Orange County resident, you might consider checking this out.

About forty talented, bright and creative women gather once a month.   Each month someone in the group reads what they have been writing and there are also a couple of the more prominent writers as guests who read from their work.

Afterwards there is discussion, meet and greet and of course, the exchange of art for money, they actually support the artists who come by buying their books and CD’s.

Yesterday the guests were Josie Brown, author (www.josiebrown.com) , Mark Maron, comediannand writer, (www.markmaron.com), Paul Provenza, comedian, author and producer (www.facebook.com/paulprovenza) , Vicki A and me.

We each demonstrated a little of our work (I sang songs that I wrote) and then we talked about it.   The group and the guests were all interesting and interested, intelligent and intellectually curious (yes, I’m counting me in there).

There was a lot of networking and interaction going on that doesn’t take place in any other arena.

The significant thing here is that our culture and our society, our media and our schools don’t seem to provide this kind of stimulation or interchange and consequently, people all over the country are creating their own scenes, house concerts, etc.

These things are all developing out of a need that is not being filled by corporate media, corporate entertainment, or corporate education.

And if you don’t live near here, then by all means, start your own soiree.    Put together interesting people  with similar but not the exact same interests, education levels and talents.

Let three different people from the group be the focus of attention each month or week and watch what happens.   The networking is amazing.   You meet all kinds of interesting people that can actually help you evolve on a multitude of levels.

Try it, you’ll like it.    And if you don’t know how to do it, contact Vicki on facebook and ask her.  She’s a delightful dynamo.  She’ll help you.
