Conference Tips Part 1

The Folk Alliance International Conference is coming up in February (www.folkalliance.org) and there are many things one should know to make the whole process easier and more rewarding for you as an artist.   As we get closer, I will put up some of the things that my pal, Paul Barker, has written that are invaluable, but today, just a short list of things that a presenter friend of mine, Cindy, has written and agreed I could publish.   This stuff is probably intuitively obvious, but it never hurts to reiterate, though it does require some inverse flexibility.  Here's what Cindy says:

As a presenter, I am trying to listen to all the artists before I attend Folk Alliance.  There are A LOT of you out there.  Please help us help you by making it easier for us to listen to your music and find you.

  • Google your name as shown on the registration - see where the top 3-5 links go - be sure you show up
  • Make a LISTEN button on your home page and make it easy to find
  • Make sure you have a couple of songs available to choose from which are representative of your material
  • Don't have a Flash intro on your home page or if you do - make it easy to skip through
  • Have links to your Discography and Tour pages and make them Text not graphics or flash - lots of people are using phones and text should be searchable by Google, etc.
  • Have a YouTube Video link so we can see what you look like performing
  • Make it easy to contact you from your home page
  • When you make a CD, take the time to find out how to put metadata on your CD which has your name, CD title, and song names.  I often download all many of my CDs to my computer to listen later - I can't find a song later if all I have is  "Unknown - Track 1".

Think about your objectives and be sure we can Listen to you, Know when you Tour, and How to buy your music.

PS. when you register for Folk Alliance and you are an artist - make sure you select "Artist" as your Category - don't leave it blank.

I am flying to Texas tomorrow for a few gigs this weekend, so I will be posting from the bushland on Friday.

I suppose I could felt it smaller, but then, felting doesn't really feel like a dude's preferred method of hat wear.
