Travel Tips - You Are Not Alone!

Traveling to North Carolina for a trio of weekend gigs, I couldn’t help but notice how completely unaware/unconscious so many travelers are.    When we’re out there, we’ve all got an agenda, we’ve all got a timetable; we’ve all got to be somewhere, so why not make it easier on each other.

Here’s a couple of tips.   Simple things really, but somehow they frequently get overlooked by the in experienced traveler.

Let’s start with arrival time.  Get to the airport early, that way no matter what unconscious people do ahead of you, you still have time to make your flight, without the stress of cardiac arrest.

Next is security.   You know that you’re going to be going thru it.   You know that they thorough to the point of ridiculous, so don’t wear boots that take twenty minutes to unlace and lace back up.   You are going to be taking them off, so wear footwear  that will make it easy on you and the people behind you who got off to a late start and are crazed that they are going to miss their flight.

When you are standing in that long line waiting to have your ID and ticket checked, take off your watch, put it in your computer bag (or whatever) along with your change.   Do everything that you can think of to make the TSA line go smoothly.     It’s just thinking of the other guy for a minute.   Couldn’t hurt.

Now, how about a little escalator/moving sidewalk awareness?   You may have had enough forthought to get to the airport early, but it’s possible that someone behind you didn’t.     If you stand there, one leg akimbo, with your bags blocking the entire area, your head in the clouds, your ass in the lane, then NOONE can pass you.   Everyone is stuck behind you.

Step to the right and put your bags ahead of you (you want to keep them in plain sight), that way some can actually pass you.   I don’t know how many times I have been stressed out behind someone who simply didn’t think that anyone else might actually be on a flight too.

Simple stuff; you are not alone at the airport, train station, bus station, etc.    And since we’re all here anyhow; standing in the TSA line; waiting for the anal probe and the other devices of discomfort that keeps us all safe from terrorists, we might as well be courteous and considerate of those around us.    Just makes the whole experience of flying today suck a little less.

Now let us consider the aisles of the plane, the jetway, etc.   these are narrow passages.   If you need to get something out of your bag before you put it in the overhead, step out of the aisle and open the bag on your seat.   Get out what you need and then step back into the aisle and place your now closed bag in the overhead.

And when leaving the plane, it is just plain stupid to stop in the aisle or the doorway of the plane and start fixing your bags.   Do it at your seat and then get into the aisle or step off the plane into the loading area of the jetway, out of anyone else’s way and THEN arrange your stuff.

Here’s the simplest thing to remember:   pretend that you are not the only person on the planet and plan accordingly.   There are people behind you and ahead of you and guess what?   They are just as important, just as loved, just as needed as you.   Give them a little respect, dammit.
